Rehoming Candy

written by her foster carer on 2 March 2006

Candy's story is both a sad and a happy one - I hope you enjoy it.
ACT Rescue and Foster normally take in dogs from local pounds that are in desperate need. We rescue them from 'death row' and look after them in our own homes until they are adopted and move out into their new forever home. Candy, however, did not come to us via the usual channels. She was a much-loved companion and still living in her home when her owner contacted ARF and asked for our help. Candy's owner was unwell and felt that she could no longer look after Candy. She felt that both Candy and the elderly dog in the family were suffering because of this. It was with great sadness that Candy's owner asked for our help in rehoming this lovely girl.

On occasion, ARF will take on a dog that has not been through the pound system, if the dog desperately needs to be rehomed and the owner is not capable of carrying out the rehoming themselves. Candy fit these criteria, and as her story was such a sad one, ARF were very happy to help Candy's owner rehome her.
Candy
Candy Candy came into foster care with her bed and all her favourite toys, but she was quite a sad girl as she was missing her family. She got on well with her foster carers dogs, and enjoyed the company of her foster carer, but she seemed to know that something was missing, and was not quite her usual self.
All this changed the day Candy met Margaret and Margaret's lovely shih-tzu cross Casey. Margaret and Casey were both missing their friend, a Maltese girl, Missy, who had passed away the previous year, and so they came to visit Candy with the hope that she would become part of their family. Quite a few people had visited Candy during her time in foster care, all with lovely homes to offer, so we had decided to leave the final choice down to Candy. Well, Candy made her choice loud and clear! As soon as she and Casey met they started playing - doing a 'dance off' that was hilarious to watch. She and Margaret also bonded straight away, and Candy was so content snuggling in Margaret's arms during their first visit.

Candy's next step was to visit Margaret and Casey's house. Would she like it? Would she feel at home? Would the garden be good for playing in? It only took Candy about five minutes to answer YES to every question. In the short space of our visit she had played in the garden, tried out the (human) bed, explored the house and picked a new favourite toy from Casey's stash.

You can see here that she found the bed to her liking!
Candy
Candy Margaret, Casey and Candy had found each other, and it was a match that was meant to be! Candy's previous owner was very happy to hear that Candy had found the perfect home for her, and Candy's foster carer shed a few tears at having to say 'goodbye' to Candy, and a few more at the joy of finding such a good home for Candy.

Update

After a few weeks at her new home where she had been spending her time going for walks, lazing in the bay window, exploring the garden, playing with Casey, sleeping on Margaret's bed (and snoring all night!), and generally having a great time, Candy wrote her foster carer a letter to let her know that all was well:

Hi Gail
Just a note to let you know how I'm going in my new home. I get Marg out of bed at 6.30AM and she takes Casey and I for a walk. We meet Goldie, she is a Maltese cross Shih Tzu, and Jasmine a maltese, both have different owners. We also have an admirer! His name is Mike, and he is an elderly gentleman from our street who thinks we are goddesses. When he sees us coming he kneels down and waits for us so that he can give us a pat, and he says, "how are you, my beautiful girls, this morning?". Then off he goes on his morning walk. We love to reach up and give him a kiss when we meet. Last weekend Marg and Maggie looked after a friend's Poodle named Sam. Well, did Casey and I give him the time of his life- we tore around the yard until we were exhausted. I am eating like a horse and Marg thinks that I might have to go on a bit of a diet. Maggie is trying to give me a cooking lesson, but as you can see I'm not that interested. The other snaps are of me taking a nap, and Casey and I resting in the garden. Well, I must away. Marg is going to mow the lawn and we just lull about and watch her. Hope all is well with you and I will come and visit you very soon. ( Oh- I hear rumours that I might be going to obedience school.)
Love
